Peel & Gudgin was established in Bury St. Edmunds by Mr. G.W.E. Peel
and Mr. Gudgin in 1936.
The business was moved to Angel Hill in 1939, where it has been ever
since. After the Second World War the company started to expand and a second
branch was opened in Stowmarket, located in 'The Arcade' which is now occupied
by the Post Office's sorting depot.
By now Mr. Golding had joined the company and along with Mr. Peel they
moved the Stowmarket branch to 7A Station Road. In December 1970 David
Hawkins began working for the company.
In 1974 Mr. Golding retired leaving Mr. Hawkins and Mr. T. Hall to take
over the Partnership with Mr. Peel.
In 1979 Mr. Peel died and Tom Hall and David Hawkins managed the
business until Tom retired in 1988 when Mrs. Hawkins came in as a partner.
During this time the Bury St. Edmunds branch had moved along Angel Hill from
No. 28 to 30.
The company continued to prosper and invited Chris Wilbraham
to join in 1996 followed by a further move of the Stowmarket branch a
short distance from 7a Station Road to Number 11. This afforded larger
premises with excellent display windows which have been used to their full
extent.
The company now employs 13 staff including the Partners.
